E-Waste Recycling
CMS Communications has been a pioneer in the recycling business. We were one of the first companies 25 years ago to take unwanted telecommunications equipment and refurbish it for resale. Continuing in this spirit we are announcing the opening of an electronic equipment (E-waste) Recycling Center at our Chesterfield, MO headquarters.
In 2007 430,000 computers* were being discarded daily, that’s over 157 million a year. Between 2006 and 2007, as much as 82 percent of the disposed electronics in the U.S. went straight in the trash and headed directly to landfills or incinerators according to the EPA. Your typical piece of electronic equipment -- especially one like a PC with many circuit boards -- may contain up to 8 pounds of lead, along with lower levels of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, beryllium and other toxic chemicals.
All businesses, non-profits, schools and public agencies in Missouri are required by law to properly manage certain discarded electronics. Computer monitors, televisions, circuit boards and other electronics contain heavy metals so they cannot be legally disposed of in the trash. Reuse or recycle through CMS as we are registered with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to help ensure you follow environmental laws.
Equipment brought to our facility or we offer pickup services (click here for coverage) is repaired, if possible, and donated to a local charity. Remaining equipment is de-manufactured and recycled or scrapped under The Department of Natural Resources guidelines. We always follow the EPA waste management hierarchy of 1. REUSE, 2.RECYCLING, 3. DISPOSAL.
